Iowa's qualifying debilitating medical conditions
To get an Iowa medical cannabidiol card, an Iowa-licensed practitioner must certify that you have one of these debilitating conditions on the state list:
- Cancer (with severe or chronic pain, nausea or severe vomiting, or cachexia or severe wasting)
- Multiple sclerosis with severe and persistent muscle spasms
- Seizures, including those characteristic of epilepsy
- AIDS or HIV
- Crohn's disease
- Ulcerative colitis
- Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS)
- Parkinson's disease
- Chronic pain
- Severe, intractable autism with self-injurious or aggressive behaviors
- Corticobasal degeneration
- Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
- Terminal illness (life expectancy under one year) with severe pain, nausea, or wasting
What makes Iowa strict
Iowa does not allow practitioner discretion: a provider cannot certify a condition that is not on the statutory list, even if they believe cannabis would help. Iowa also caps purchases at 4.5 grams of THC per 90 days (a practitioner can certify more for a terminal illness or when that amount is insufficient), does not allow smokable cannabis, and has no recreational market.

Frequently asked questions
What conditions qualify for an Iowa medical cannabis card?
Iowa has a set list of debilitating conditions, including cancer (with severe symptoms), multiple sclerosis, seizures/epilepsy, AIDS/HIV, Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, ALS, Parkinson's, chronic pain, severe intractable autism, PTSD, corticobasal degeneration, and terminal illness.
Does Iowa allow a practitioner to certify any condition?
No. Iowa is strict: a practitioner can only certify a condition on the statutory list under Iowa Code 124E. Unlike some states, there is no general practitioner-discretion option.
Does chronic pain qualify in Iowa?
Yes. Chronic pain is one of Iowa's listed debilitating conditions (broadened from untreatable pain in 2020), and PTSD also qualifies. An Iowa-licensed practitioner must confirm your condition.
Does Iowa cap how much THC I can get?
Yes. Iowa limits patients to 4.5 grams of THC every 90 days - a defining feature of its strict program - though a practitioner may certify more for a terminal illness or when the standard amount is insufficient.
Can a minor get an Iowa medical cannabis card?
Yes. A minor with a qualifying condition can be served through a registered caregiver (a parent or guardian) who applies on the minor's behalf, in addition to the practitioner certification.
